Reflection

When we were discussing the different photography exhibits at the BMFA and that we had to do an emulation I had a few ideas going through my head. When I saw "fashion photography" my focus changed. I immediately thought of Barbie dolls. Barbie is a fashion icon and is constantly evolving to fit modern views of beauty and fashion (which is a good and bad thing). Barbie often receives the same criticism as models because of their shape (or lack thereof).

RIchard Avedon has set a standard for modern fashion photographers (as Barbie as set many standards regarding looks and fashion, however, Avedon's influence is more of a positive one than Barbie's).

For my emulation I had to take the position of stylist (of both clothes and hair), set designer, prop manager, and, of course, photographer. I raided my Barbie collection, and my sister's, to find the dolls and clothes that matched best, as well as buying a new doll.

For the last two, I placed them in outfits that best matched the original and posed them against my bedroom wall, to match the backdrop. For the second one I made the headpiece and laid the doll down, placing it on top of her.

The first one was the most technical to photograph. First, I had to style the dolls hair (cutting, twisting, etc.). Then I scoped out the perfect location in my sister's "Barbie Dream House" and collecting different furniture and accessories to use. After setting that up, I put the doll on a doll holder and posed her in front of the vanity. Realizing the dull view of the basement out the window was distracting, I taped some tissue paper over the window and aimed a desk lamp at it, to create a sort of sillhoutte of the doll.

I changed the color to black and white to better match the original.
